Mary Margaret Whipple: I'm With Deeds
Dear Friend:
I'm writing to ask for your support for my friend and colleague Senator Creigh Deeds for Governor.
I am supporting Creigh because of his distinguished record in the General Assembly, for his passion for the environment, because of his good heart and commitment to doing what is right, and because he has already shown he can win statewide.
Creigh came to the Senate after ten years of service in the House of Delegates. When Emily Couric lost her battle with cancer in 2001, Creigh stepped up to serve in her old district, which stretches from his home in Bath County to the City of Charlottesville. In the seven years he's been with us in the Senate he's impressed my colleagues and me with his knowledge of the issues and his dedication to Virginia.
He sponsored Megan's and Alicia's Laws to combat sexual predators and sponsored the Amber Alert Program. He's been a leading advocate for public education and has always protected a woman's right choose. Nobody understands the issues of the environment and energy like Senator Deeds: he led the fight to clean up the Kim-Stan Landfill Superfund site and wrote one of the most progressive conservation laws in the nation.
When he announced he was running for Governor, I was proud to add my name to his growing list of supporters. Creigh Deeds is the Democratic candidate who will continue the Warner-Kaine brand of leadership that has brought us so far and will stand up every day for our shared progressive values.
It is all but certain that Attorney General Bob McDonnell will be the Republican nominee for Governor next year. Creigh proved to us in 2005-when he was our Democratic nominee-he could beat McDonnell by coming within just 360 votes out of more than 2 million cast. This despite having just half the resources of the Bush-Cheney funded Bob McDonnell. It was the closest statewide election in Virginia history!
We can't let the policies and politics of George W. Bush's Republican Party take control of state government here in Virginia. We must defeat Bob McDonnell, and I know that if we unite behind Creigh early, he will be successful next year.
That's why I'm asking you to join me in supporting Creigh Deeds' campaign for Governor with your generous financial contribution. Whether it's $500, $250, $100, or whatever you can afford, your support will make a real difference and will ensure we keep the Warner-Kaine brand of leadership alive and well here in Virginia.
We're going to miss Creigh's leadership, knowledge and exuberant personality in the Virginia Senate, but I'm looking forward to working with him as our next Governor as we tackle the challenges facing us in the years ahead. Please join me in supporting his campaign. It will make a real difference for Virginia's future.
Sincerely,
Senator Mary Margaret Whipple
